How much money do I need to put into a pet trust?

The amount of money you put into a pet trust depends on a lot of different variables, What kind of animals do you have? how old are they and what are their needs? If you have race horses that are retired and they're your pets, and they're going to live for another 30 years, you're certainly going to need a different amount of money, than if you have a 13 year old cat and maybe a tortoise. So you have to look at how long the animal is going to live and look at the life expectancy, and then what the needs of the animal are. I say to my clients, “Go back and annualize what you've spent on your pet for the past year, and then multiply it by the life span of the animal”.
